A First at the Bench: Making My Very First Bolo Tie

Every once in a while, I get an idea in my head that I just can’t shake. This one was a bolo tie.

I’ve always loved bolo ties—the Western heritage, the bold look, the history behind them. But I had never tried making one. Ever. It felt intimidating for some reason. Maybe because it’s a piece that isn’t just jewelry—it’s personal, it’s statement-making, and it carries a tradition all its own.

Then I got this incredible Red Jasper from Amy over at Dark Sky Rocks, and it felt like the right stone to take the leap. The color is deep and earthy with the most beautiful natural character—rich reds, subtle movement, and a strength that immediately drew me in.

I wanted this first bolo tie to feel classic but still have my own touch, so I kept the setting simple, strong, and timeless. I added handmade flower accents on top—because, of course, I can never leave well enough alone.

The whole process was such a learning experience. From figuring out the right balance and size, to setting the stone in a way that felt secure and bold, to making sure the tips and braid all came together the way I envisioned—it took time, patience, and more problem solving than I expected.

But that’s also what I love about trying something new.

It pushes me. It teaches me. And it reminds me why I do this.

This bolo tie may be my first, but it definitely won’t be my last. I can already see myself making more—different stones, different shapes, maybe even some with mixed metal.

For now, I’m just really proud of this one. It feels like a piece that honors the tradition of bolo ties while still carrying the Golden Rune Jewelry spirit.
